When a guy doesnt know what he wants?

long story short, i was seeing a guy for a couple months. things got really serious and then out of nowhere he stopped talking to me. 2 months later we start seeing eachother again and he tells me he missed me a lot and just got scared because he wanted to date me (his last relationship ended because he wanted a break in the relationship so she ended things but he planned on marrying the girl) and hasnt had a gf in 4 years. basically he kept being hot and cold so i put everything on the table and told him how i felt about the situation and he said he didnt know what he wanted. i said we can be friends or we can just stop seeing each other for a while and talk about it and figure things out in some time.. he asked me what i preferred and i said i wasnt sure about being friends and id rather us stop talking and seeing one another for now. i asked that if he knew for sure he didnt ever see us together to just tell me now. he kept saying he wasnt going to say no because he doesnt know. so basically he said he was sorry he had hurt me and if we are meant to be together we will be together. i have moved on in the past couple weeks but i am still not sure if this is something that could ever possibly work or not. thanks
