Compatible Ds Wifi...?

I have my ds and some wifi compatible games adn when im at my friends house i can use his wirel adapeter to hook up to wifi. he has a link sys router. but when im at my house and i try to hook up with my router it dosent work. i have a d link. what would be the diffrence in wireless routers that would allow his to work and mine not? we both have broadband.
